The Executive 2014
July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015
Angela Sutcliffe, President
Angela Sutcliffe is an award-winning business consultant who has been in business longer than most people have even thought of owning a business.
She speaks from the heart and from practical experience as well as the experience gained from over 25 years of working with business owners full of anxiety, self-doubt and fear. She swears that business is not for the faint of heart! Her ability to distil complex business concepts into easy-to understand, immediately implementable next steps—and her whacky, self-depreciating sense of humour—engages people in their own process of change and helps them to shift the internal dialogue from “I’m not sure I’m doing this right” to “oh, this is normal, of course I can”.
Angela is the consummate story-teller which means that what she teaches sticks. She is an advocate for applied learning – in other words, ideas are good, action steps are better. Nobody walks away from one of Angela’s presentations without at least three “to do’s” to keep the momentum going. She calls it “practical motivation”.

Laura Gagńe, Secretary
Laura joined Toastmasters in 2005 because she knew she would have to defend her PhD thesis. She was nervous about making presentations, and thought Toastmasters could help. Her first club was West Carleton. After finding out what a supportive group of people they were, and seeing how much experience and expertise these people had, she knew this would be the best place to learn the skills she needed.
Over the years she has served on the executive committee and been involved in many activities with the club. She also started to compete in the different public speaking contests, representing West Carleton many times on the District Stage (and bringing home trophies).
Laura is currently a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa, having completed her PhD in 2012. One of her defence committee members told her that hers was the best defended defence he had ever seen. The Toastmasters program obviously works! Laura received her Distinguished Toastmaster Award just weeks after finishing her PhD. She finds the skills she has learned at Toastmasters are helpful in her daily life. As Gary Mull said, “if you get out of Toastmasters everything you can get out of Toastmasters, you will never get out of Toastmasters.” Laura is in for life.
